Badruddin Amiruldin’s apology over a crude remark is hollow and unforgivable, said Bukit Gelugor member of Parliament Karpal Singh today. The opposition stalwart said Badruddin’s apology had compounded injury against women throughout the country by saying it was a joke.
“His remark has left an indelible scar on the psyche on all women in the country. He has a mother and daughter whom he puts to shame by his remarks,” Karpal said in a statement.
The Jerai MP in his capacity as acting permanent chairperson of the recent Umno general assembly had made the crude remark during a Wanita Umno delegate’s debate.
At the debate, Wanita Umno Kubang Kerian chief Zaleha Hussin had complained about the short skirt worn by AirAsia female cabin crew.
This was the exchange between Zaleha and Badruddin at last week's Umno AGM.
Zaleha: The provocative uniform must be changed to something reflective of Eastern values and which complies with the values of Islam.
Badruddin: I think their skirts are too short.
Zaleha: Cloth can be bought.
Badruddin: I think they don’t have enough cloth.
Zaleha pressed her point further by relating how the uniform had ‘affected’ one of her friends, leading Badruddin to pass another cheeky remark.
Zaleha: She said a flight attendant sat in front of her and she could see her legs, thighs and knees. She was so embarrassed!
Badruddin: Did she see the tunnel? [crowd roars with laughter]
Badruddin's remark led to a public outcry against the Umno politician resulting in his apology to all women yesterday. He explained that he had no intention to insult anyone when he said this. Badruddin claimed that he had meant the remark as a joke and that he was not referring to any body part of the female anatomy.
Karpal opined that the Jerai MP should not be allowed to get away lightly by mere repeated apologies and urged Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to restrain him.
“I would call upon the PM in the name of national interest, to ensure Badruddin is not nominated for re-election in the coming elections. This would be a good lesson to other would-be Badaruddin’s [...] a leopard cannot change its spots but it can be taught a lesson by being confined in a cage,” he said.
The DAP veteran also warned Badruddin to cease and desist from further repetition of his conduct. “The next time an apology will not be accepted. Sterner measures will be taken against him if he persists in making outrageous and offensive remarks,” he added.

Nak buat macam mana. What do you expect when you ask a bunch of idiots to choose their leader?
